I start with the eye and once the eye is painted, the personality of the subject begins to emerge as I move through the work. Each piece is then embellished with an element from the environment, which may be a native plant or beadwork inspired by indigenous people. Plants also appear both as supporting elements that reference a given environment or as the subject of a drawing.<span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-astglobalcolor4 ); text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var( --e-global-color-astglobalcolor7 );\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>Bears are a subject I have continued to come back to over the years, working exclusively in a 4\u2018 x 6\u2018 format. These pieces have developed into works that express my interest in anthropology and archaeology and the backgrounds reflect ideas ranging from pre-Columbian cave paintings to contemporary native art.<\/p><p>Most recently I have been working on a series of large-scale drawings created using only a 4B pencil.
