Animals Inspire Me.............
Animals are my first love and all of my current work portrays animals or plants of the Americas.
My plains animal paintings are large scale and each figure is floating on a color field which sets the mood for the piece. I start with the eye and once the eye is painted, the personality of the subject begins to emerge as I move through the work. Each piece is then embellished with an element from the environment, which may be a native plant or beadwork inspired by indigenous people. Plants also appear both as supporting elements that reference a given environment or as the subject of a drawing.
Bears are a subject I have continued to come back to over the years, working exclusively in a 4‘ x 6‘ format. These pieces have developed into works that express my interest in anthropology and archaeology and the backgrounds reflect ideas ranging from pre-Columbian cave paintings to contemporary native art.
Most recently I have been working on a series of large-scale drawings created using only a 4B pencil. While much more time consuming, this technique allows me to achieve detail and texture that is simply not possible with other mediums and each piece creates a new exciting challenge.
